Hypoallergenic Cleaning: How to Reduce Allergens at Home

Sneezing fits that arrive every morning. Itchy eyes by evening. A child who always seems congested indoors but fine outside. For millions of Canadians, the trigger isn't the outdoors — it's the house itself. Dust mites, pet dander, mould, and pollen collect in bedding, carpets, and upholstery, and both dust and mites can aggravate asthma and trigger allergic reactions.

The good news: you can't eliminate allergens entirely, but smart cleaning can dramatically reduce your exposure. Here's how, room by room and habit by habit.

Know Your Enemies

The most common indoor allergens are dust mites, pet dander, mould, and pollen tracked in from outside. Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live anywhere dust accumulates — beds, carpets, furniture, even plush toys. They thrive in warm, humid environments, which makes bedrooms their favourite territory. Understanding this shapes every tip below: the goal is to remove their habitat, not just the visible dust.

The Bedroom: Start Where You Sleep

You spend roughly a third of your life in bed, breathing what's in your mattress and pillows. This room gives you the biggest return on effort:

  • Encase pillows and mattresses in dust-mite-impermeable covers. This single step puts a barrier between you and the largest mite colony in the house.
  • Wash all bedding in hot water weekly — sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers. Heat is what kills mites and removes the allergen.
  • Replace pillows regularly, and discard any cushions, mattresses, or stuffed toys that have stayed damp or been stored in humid conditions.
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom if allergies are significant, and groom them regularly if they share your home.
  • Declutter. Fewer surfaces and objects means fewer places for dust to settle.

Dust the Right Way (Most People Do This Wrong)

Dry dusting with a feather duster or dry cloth doesn't remove dust — it launches it into the air, where it stays suspended for hours and ends up in your lungs. Health Canada's guidance is clear on the fix:

  • Always use a damp mop or damp cloth on floors and surfaces. Moisture traps dust instead of scattering it.
  • Vacuum carpets, curtains, and soft furnishings frequently — at least weekly — using a vacuum with a HEPA filter that traps small particles instead of blowing them back out.
  • Consider a central vacuum vented outdoors if you're renovating or replacing your system; it removes the recirculation problem entirely.
  • If you have a dust-mite allergy, wear a filtering mask while cleaning and stay out of the room for a while afterward while stirred-up dust settles.

Control Moisture and Ventilation

Dust mites and mould both love humidity. Keeping indoor relative humidity between 35 and 50% makes your home significantly less hospitable to both:

  • Run a dehumidifier in damp areas like basements, and whenever you see moisture condensing on windows.
  • Always use the bathroom exhaust fan when showering, and keep the shower door or curtain open afterward so everything dries fully.
  • Fix leaks promptly. Standing water and damp materials are mould invitations — clean up small mould areas yourself and discard anything you can't fully dry.
  • Improve ventilation throughout the home, and change furnace filters regularly so allergens aren't recirculated.

Flooring and Furnishing Choices

Soft surfaces are allergen reservoirs. If allergies are a serious concern:

  • Consider replacing bedroom carpets with hard flooring like hardwood, laminate, or tile.
  • Choose washable items where possible — washable curtains, washable stuffed toys (dried completely before use), washable throw blankets.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture weekly with a HEPA-filter vacuum, or opt for leather or synthetic-leather furniture that doesn't trap allergens.

A Cleaner Home You Can Actually Breathe In

Reducing allergens isn't about one heroic deep clean — it's about consistent habits: damp dusting, hot-water laundry, HEPA vacuuming, and humidity control. But a professional deep clean is the perfect reset button: it clears months of accumulated allergens from carpets, upholstery, baseboards, and all the spots daily routines miss, giving your new habits a clean baseline to maintain.
